Canton August 24th My dear friend Cephas, I cannot deny myself the pleasure of writing a few lines - alltho [sic] it is attended with some inconvenience - As my health at this time is very delicate - I was attacked on tuesday last with a bilious complaint - which has confined me to my bed most of the time - But I apprehend it is nothing alarming I find myself much better this morning than what I was yesterday - The medium has very favorable effect - And I think in a very few days I shall be quite well - I received yours of the 28th July last mail it relieved me from a world of anxiety as I conceived your health was not good when you wrote the letter before - I have news to impart which to me is truly afflicting - yes Cephas I have lately been called to drink of the bitter cup of affliction - I have been called to mourn the death of a dear a favorite little sister - She departed this life on the morning of the eleventh after an illness of of four days - It is at present very sickly in this place particular ly among children - The dysantary [sic] is very prevalent - Adieu Cephas they say I must not write any more - [page break] I shall endeavor to write again next mail and tell you the state of my health - Louisa [page break] [addressed to] Canton Augt [sic] 23rd 1816 Capt.
